Research Data supporting "Age and an obesogenic diet affect mouse behaviour in a sex-dependent manner"

Description

There are three variables: age (8-9 weeks, 11-13 weeks and 20-22), sex, and diet (control or high fat, high sugar).

There are three types of data:

  1. Behaviour (open field OF, elevated plus maze EPM or social preference SP tasks): effects of age (OF and EPM only), sex and diet
  2. Nutrient intake: food intake, calorie intake and protein intake
  3. Body composition: body weight, total body fat mass and individual fat deposit masses.

All three types of data are in CSV files.

  1. Behavioural data: these are structured by sex and either age (Figure 1, OF; Figure 2, EPM) or by diet (OF, Figure 5; EPM, Figure 6; SP, Figure 7). For OF data, measurements include the total number of lines crossed in the OF, the number of entries into the centre of the OF, the time spent in the centre of the OF (in seconds) and the number of times the mouse rears within the OF. For EPM data, measurements include the time spent in the open arm of the EPM (% of total), the number of full entries to the open arm, the number of full entries to the closed arm, the number of explorations to the end of the open arm, and the number of times the mouse rears in the open arm. For SP data, measurements include the time spent in the intruder compartment as a % of total time and the social preference index (TS-TNS)/(TS+TNS), where TS is the social stimulus or intruder mouse and TNS is the non-social stimulus or object.
  2. Nutrient intake is expressed as either kcal or g of food or protein per day per gram of mouse, measured weekly over a 24h period from weeks 9-13 for a subset of cages. There is a single CSV file containing the data for male and female mice on either the standard lab chow or on the high fat, high sugar diet.
  3. Body composition: total body fat and lean mass (measured by Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA) scanning (Lunar PIXImus densitometer; GE Healthcare) and/or the weights of the individual fat deposits and body organs are expressed in grams. There is a single CSV file containing the data for male and female mice on either the standard lab chow or on the high fat, high sugar diet.
