Description

Research data supporting 'Bumblebees negotiate a trade-off between nectar quality and floral biomechanics'.

TradeOffData.csv: CSV file with timing data from bee observations. During the experiments, a simple custom computer program was used to record the orientation of flowers which the bee visited and drank sucrose solution from, as well as the time spent visiting, drinking, flying between flowers, or resting. Recordings were triggered in real-time using keyboard shortcuts. This wrapped SQL statements to different keystrokes, with a different keystroke for each behavioural activity. Alongside each observation/behaviour a timestamp in milliseconds was recorded, giving a sequence of such behavioural observations for each bee. The data file records observation ID (a unique sequential number), the colony from which the bees originated (1-3), bee ID, sucrose difference treatment (control, high difference or low difference), foraging surface (coarse-rough or micro-rough), a randomly allocated flower ID for each visit, the observation, the time in milliseconds spent performing the activity, the bout number of the trip, and the drink number for each bee.

BeeMasses.csv contains colony ID, bee ID and mass of bee in mg.
