Title: Gaucho [and horses]
Contributors: Cambridge University Library
Issue Date: 14-Jun-2007
Abstract: Gaucho and horses.
Description: Drawing. The sky is blank; the sun shines from behind Martens' vantage point. The annotation in the base left reads: "Page 48 Vol 3". Two human figures stand in the left centre and centre of the picture, behind whom a saddled horse is sketched flank-on facing right. To its right a second saddled horse stands head-on to the viewer. The annotation beneath the left centre figure reads: "Gaucho"; that beneath the left-hand horse: "darkest[?] horse"; that beneath the right-hand horse probably: "pach of blond dun". The left-hand figure wears a dark wide-brimmed hat, and is seen in three-quarters-profile from behind; his poncho is dark, his trousers lighter, and he carries a stick in his right hand. He stands facing the second figure, who has a narrow brimmed dark hat, a moustache and a small beard, and is likewise wearing poncho and trousers, and is possibly holding something in his left hand. The annotations at the left-hand edge have lines pointing to appropriate parts of the left-hand figure, and read: "Poncho", "chilipa" (to the main or outer trouser legs), and "calzoncillos" (to the lower or inner trouser legs). The background is occupied by flat ground stretching to an indistinctly indicated horizon which may terminate in a line of trees or buildings on the left-hand side.
