Title: Islands off Rio Harbour
Contributors: Cambridge University Library
Issue Date: 14-Jun-2007
Abstract: A coastal land/seascape, with seabirds and boat.
Description: Watercolour. [Ilha Redonda and Ilha Rasa, with Pedra de Gavea behind.]
The foreground water is darkish blue with an indication of slight ripples, and some whiter sun or cloud reflections; the sun is shining from the right perpendicular to the viewer's line of sight. In the left foreground--midground, a flock of some half dozen seabirds is flying low over the water, with a further solitary bird shown above and to the right of the group, against the sky, which is of a uniform pale bluish purple fading to blank at the horizon. In the midground, behind and above the flock of birds, a boat with raised sails is shown side-on facing right just to the right of a tall conical rocky island (the Ilha Redonda(?)) in the left midground of the picture. Its shadowed half and craggy top are coloured a darkish grey-purple, with its sun-reflecting right surface in white with touches of pale blue and grey. Another smaller island (the Ilha Rasa?) is shown in the right midground, with similar coloration. There is scant indication of vegetation on the two islands. A small tower-like structure is visible atop Ilha Rasa. In the background, a distant hilly shoreline emerges behind Ilha Redonda and the sailing boat, disappearing in the centre behind the abrupt, substantial, and purplish hills (of Pedra de Gavea?), which occupy the centre and right of the picture.
