Clinical and Biomedical Computing Unit [CBCU]

Since it was established in September 1997, the Clinical and Biomedical Computing Unit [CBCU] has been developing and supporting clinical and biomedical computing initiatives at the University of Cambridge School of Clinical Medicine [the Clinical School], which is located on the Addenbrooke's Hospital NHS Trust site.

In May 2001, CBCU began sharing additional office space with the University's Centre for Applied Research in Educational Technologies [CARET] at 16 Mill Lane, in central Cambridge. In addition to benefiting from a range of shared resources, CBCU is able to draw on expertise within CARET to support its work for the Clinical School.

Current areas of activity within CBCU:

  • the creation of generic tools and systems to support the delivery of effective online clinical education [SIFT funded]
  • the generation of algorithms for automated mining and coding of clinical data [SIFT funded]
  • the development of security models to support large-scale, web-based electronic health records architectures [external funds]
  • the design, development, implementation and evaluation of clinical information systems [external funds]
