Project summary (Phase I) : This proposal relates to a revolutionary new sheet material composed of twin metallic faceplates separated by a core incorporating metallic fibers. This material has the potential for offering unprecedented combinations of low areal density, high beam stiffness, good corrosion resistance, attractive thermal insulation and acoustic damping properties and excellent formability. It has potential for wide and substantial commercial impact. Before this can happen, however, several technical issues must be resolved. A 12-month preparatory project is proposed, aimed at answering several important questions concerning technical optimization and industrial exploitation. A team of industrial organizations will support the project and one of the objectives of the activity will be to refine and develop the plans for industrial exploitation. - - Project summary (Phase II): A team of industrial partners has been assembled and their technical contributions to the overall research and development effort have been identified. An agreement has been drawn up by CMI and Volvo, concerning IPR and industrial exploitation of work to be done in the proposed project.
