Description

There are two captions pasted on the reverse of the photograph. The first caption reads: 'Nigeria has in hand development plans involving the expenditure of UKP40,000,000 during the next 11 years. It is essential that the government should have at its disposal first class doctors, engineers, surveyors, agriculture, forestry and voluntary officers and teachers - and, that so many as possible should be Africans. The work of the 13-year-old Higher College at Yaba [it was founded in 1934] is therefore more important than ever. The College entrance examination is of a considerably higher standard than the English School Certificate. Of those who pass, approximately one third win scholarships; full fees are UKP50 per annum but students who cannot afford the full amount are accepted at a reduced rate of UKP15 per annum. In addition there is an arrangement whereby in special cases fees may be paid after the student has completed his training and obtained employment. The College offers courses in Medicine, Engineering, Agriculture, Forestry, Survey, Veterinary, and Teaching'. The second caption reads: 'DW.2832. Picture shows:- 'A Mohammedan student in the library of the Higher College - 'Abu Mawashi, whose home is at Kat Katsima in the Northern Provinces. He is taking the pre-medical course. After 1?ars at the College he hopes to be admitted to the Medical School of Nigeria, where he will do another five years training. If he graduates successfully he may then either obtain an appointment as an Assistant Medical Officer or launch out in private practice'. Photograph taken circa 1947.
