New South Wales Contingent for South Africa, 1899

Title: New South Wales Contingent for South Africa, 1899
Description: A loose black and white print showing embarked troops waving to crowds on the dockside. A handwritten note on the back of the print states: 'Departure of 'A' Battery, RAA, S.S. 'Warregal' (for Boer War) left Port Jackson 30 Dec 1899'. The outbreak of the war on 11th October 1899 produced enthusiastic volunteering throughout the Australian Colonies. A meeting in Melbourne in September 1899, had determined upon sending a joint contingent to number 2500 men in the event of war. Over half this number did eventually see service in South Africa, and what had been originally regarded in the War Office as a touching token of loyalty from the Colonies, was transformed into outright admiration of the Australian troops. Lord Roberts later stated: 'All the Colonials did extremely well. They were very intelligent, and they had, what I want our men to have, more individuality'.

Title: Native constabulary and police on parade outside Govt. [i.e. Government] House, Suva
Description: 228 x 176 mm. A view showing a European officer in charge of a squad of the police (unarmed and dressed in white). Behind them, and largely obscured, stands a squad of armed constabulary in blue blouses and white sarongs cut into a serrated pattern round the hem. Formed in the early 1870s, the force was used extensively against the hill tribes of the interior and in the days of King Cakobau this small army was said to have numbered 1400 men. The Europeans standing in the background have not been identified. The parade was to present medals to the Fijian boat crew and police who distinguished themselves during the rescue of survivors of the 'Syria' wreck in 1884. (This was the second ship to bring indentured Indians to Fiji. She was wrecked on Nasilai Reef, with the loss of 56 lives).
